Fresh Faces Friday: The Fresh Committee Introduces Mad Squablz
Following in a long line of Philadelphia emcees such as Scholly D, Beanie Sigel, and Black Thought, this week’s featured artist Mad Squablz reps Philly right.
The Mad MC, who is named after one of Denzel Washington’s lines in Training Day. Has epitomized the underground for the better part of six years, ever since busting onto the scene with his first mixtape, titled Publice to the Game.
Now 23 and a vet in the game having racked up accolades, including winning 2017’s TeamBackpack Cypher Challenge, appearing on SHADE45, and teaming up with producers such as iLLMind among others. Squablz rhymes have always been tight:
Nothing lasts forever, I know (I know)/ Runnin’ out of time and I know I can’t wait no more, hey/ Pedal to the floor/ Niggas tryna hit my groove (Yeah)/ Cause they know I’ma finna be the goat/ In time, spillin’ my vision and I feel it’s my mission, gotta let ’em know I’m comin’ for the throne (Yeah)/
The UMA award winner can switch up his style and cadence like few others, keeping you guessing while he keeps you listening.
His most recent effort – The Art of Boom Bap II is an 8 track compilation that kicks off on a menacing tip with a beat drop followed by Squablz declaring: “I’ve been the illest to rap since lyricism collapsed”. One listen to Mad Squablz and you’ll instantly realize that his growing reputation is well deserved!
