Fresh Faces Friday: Shawn Smith

Fresh Faces Friday: The Fresh Committee Introduces Shawn Smith.

After sifting through countless Souncloud preview links, Twitter freestyles and Instagram posts tagged #newhiphop for this inaugural weekly column, one artist and their story stood out – Shawn Smith

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he spent most of his adolescent days honing his craft and making a name for himself with clever freestyles uploaded to YouTube which gained him recognition locally and along the east coast.
After stepping away from the game for a good minute, he’s returned with a more mature sound and even better bars like this verse from “Shootout” off his debut EP Sink or Swim: A Shawn Smith Story:

If you can’t swim, you bound to drown;

Doing petty crimes like stealin’ a dead Sprint phone; One slip, run in ya whip like Fred Flintstone; All a nigga life, been judgin’ me by my skin tone; You should read my essays, a month before I graduated ’bout the government and how the masters from the past was racists; Teachers aggravated, mad I made it but they had to grade it; Agitated ’cause I know enough to get assassinated; I should probably chill on exposing all of they bad secrets ‘Fore the government try to smother me for my brash speakin’ Creep through the city and give me that plastic bag treatment.

Blessing the City of Brotherly Love and all of us with such gritty, raw and honest storytelling leaves a lot to look forward to from an artist who may be a future prince of Philly.
