Umbrella Mob fans were given another gift this afternoon as Tory Lanez dropped a surprise single entitled ‘What Happened to the Kids’. The Toronto native released the track and visuals on his official YouTube page at 3 PM eastern with a heads up to fans last night on his instagram.
The track and its visuals hold a deeper message than many of the Hip Hop crooners more upbeat hits. The video opens to a rather grisly scene of a youth covered by a blanket on the street. Throughout the 5:00 minute clip, Lanez echoes the sad truths of what many urban youths deal with on a daily basis. Section-8 housing, themes of low-income struggles and violence between black youths are prevalent in every scene.
An important topic. A polarizing topic. And after the passing of Nipsey Hussle the month before last, the message the Love Me Now alum communicates through this piece of work are more important now than ever.
It’s refreshing to see an artist of his status still paying attention to the demographic that makes up so much of his fan base. One thing’s for sure, Lanez remembers the harder times before fame and definitely not forgotten where he comes from.
