5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls franchise, Skyrim is an open-world action RPG that can be played in either first or third person. Developed using the Creation Engine, this allows the player’s character to roam around the land of Nirn.

The game consists of many common high fantasy tropes, featuring various character customizations from many different fighting classes and races. Another highlight is the combat system which perfectly matches each fighting class.

4. Borderlands 2

Series: Borderlands

The second installment in the Borderlands series takes place five years after the original game. Borderlands 2 allows players to complete a campaign consisting of central quests and optional side missions as one of four treasure seekers, “Vault Hunters,” on the planet Pandora.

Key gameplay features from its predecessor return, such as online collaborative campaign gameplay and randomly generated loot, including weapons, shields, and character-building elements commonly found in other RPGs are in Borderlands 2.

3. Fallout 4

The fifth major installment in the Fallout series, Fallout 4 is set within an open-world, post-apocalyptic environment that encompasses the city of Boston and the surrounding Massachusetts region known as “The Commonwealth”.

The player assumes control of a character referred to as the “Sole Survivor,” who emerges from a long-term cryogenic stasis in Vault 111, an underground nuclear fallout shelter. After witnessing the murder of their spouse and kidnapping of their son, the Sole Survivor ventures out into the Commonwealth to search for their missing child.

2. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition is an action role-playing video game developed by BioWare Edmonton and published by Electronic Arts. The third major game in the Dragon Age franchise, Inquisition has won several Game of the Year titles in the year 2014.

The story of Dragon Age: Inquisition follows a character known as the “Inquisitor” on a journey to settle the civil unrest in the continent of Thedas and close a mysterious tear in the sky called the “Breach,” which is unleashing dangerous demons upon the world. The Inquisitor is viewed by some as the ‘chosen one’, as they have a mark on their hand capable of closing the Breach.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective. In the game, players assume control of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a witcher. Geralt can walk, run, roll, and dodge, and for the first time in the series, also jump, climb, and swim. Geralt is equipped with a large variety of weapons, including bombs, a crossbow, as well as steel and silver swords.

The Witcher 3 went on to become the most awarded game of 2015, receiving numerous Game of the Year awards from gaming publications, critics, and award events. It is regarded by many to be one of the greatest RPGs of all-time.
