Kanye has done it again. At last night’s MTV VMA awards, Yeezy unveiled his new music video from his album Life of Pablo, ‘Fade’ featuring G.O.O.D artist, Teyana Taylor. Taylor, West’s protégé is featured in the TIDAL exclusive sweating up a storm in a flashdance-esque choreographed number. The video takes place in a gym then culminates in a shot featuring a Teyana as a lioness-faced humanoid. Fade was directed by Kanye and Eli Linnetz, who also directed the “Famous” music video. The track features additional vocals from Ty Dolla $ign and Post Malone.
In an interview with Pitchfork.com, veteran artistic director and choreographer, Jae Blaze spoke about Yeezus’ part in the direction of the video saying “Kanye, is a creative genius. When he came in, he told us, ‘I like this particular move, but I want to take it to the next level. Show me what you can do on top of this move.’ He has something specific on his mind, as a visionary. And we have to translate that onto Teyana’s body. Teyana’s a beast, so it really made our job easy as far as, ‘Hey Teyana, give him what he wants. Let’s do it this way. Let’s try it this way.’ That’s basically how the day went down.”
Speaking of beastly movements, Taylor is seasoned choreographer herself. Her resume includes some of hip hop’s biggest names, i.e. HOV, Beyonce, Chris Brown, as well, she has a coveted gig as a judge on TV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. So, it comes as no surprise that she incorporates many aspects of dance in the racy work of art. One particular movement called “bruk back”, originally a Jamaican dancehall dance created by the dancers Outshine Crew is featured. In essence, it’s a very gritty, a very earthy movement where you pound your back upwards and downwards. Taylor did exactly that, making headlines as she fiercely showcases the move on the gymnasium floor of the video, clad in a grey g-string. Other styles Taylor integrates include locking and popping and African tribal movements.
The video ends with Taylor and her fiancee, Cavaliers player Iman Shumpert, breast to back sat among sheep with their eight month old daughter in the midst. True to Kanye form, the gasp worthy ending left fans at odds as to its artistic significance. Some arguing that it was just another way to “sexualize” the video with Taylor literally becoming “p***y”. Others cited religious references. All are possible, however if we’re talking about Mr. West, who is anything but shy when it comes to his work, it may be a play on the mantra “a lion does not lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.” Whatever it is, Kanye never ceases to mesmerize us with his risque artistic ventures. And this time he certainly added and extra dash of black magic to spellbind us all, aka Teyana Taylor. Watch the full video of Kanye West’s “FADE” Below.
