The Lil Nas X Viral Hit “Old Town Road” Has Been Removed from the Billboard Country Chart

Earlier today Rolling Stone reported that Billboard recently removed Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” from their Hot Country Songs chart because the song isn’t “country” enough. The song gained popularity at such a rapid pace that many radio stations were forced to rip the audio of the record from Soundcloud and other online platforms just to play it on air.

The record is clearly a country inspired record and is categorized on many platforms including iTunes and SoundCloud as pop while Spotify has labeled the song Pop leaving the genre of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” up for debate. As you listen closely to this one while the heavy 808 hits and hi-hat’s are trap influenced there are banjo samples as well as a number of mentions of the cowboy life as well as a Red Dead Redemption laden video. In today’s racial climate Billboard made a point to note the following on it’s stance

“(Our) decision to take the song off of the country chart had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist”

Lil Nas tweeted the following in response to the bad news:

Lil Nas X “Old Town Road” will always be my top Country song of all time.
