The Official 2017 KAMMY Award Nominations List

Hello, and welcome to TheFreshCommittee’s second annual installment of the KAMMY Awards! Due to my personal contempt towards the Grammys, I decided to hand out my own awards. Since 2012, I have compiled what I deem to be the most impressive musical works in my four favorite genres. At first, it was only me putting this list together. Although I have a capable ear, I realized I needed help. Listening to so much music in a year’s time usually results in more than a few snubs. So I enlisted my good friend Jad Elias to ensure I gave a fair assessment of all the great popular music in each of the last five years. Not only is he a key contributor to the finalization of all 25 categories, he also chooses the recipient of Beat of the Year.

Despite these awards being mostly up to me, I do my best to remain objective in my decisions. I am responsible for the majority of TFC’s album reviews. However, an album’s high review score does not necessarily equate to an automatic win in their respective category. My scores and feelings change throughout the year. If you regularly visit the site, you will notice my album review scores fluctuate based on subsequent listens. This idea is adapted from my favorite music artist, Kanye West. His seventh studio album The Life of Pablo, though I rank it low in his catalog, has an intriguing concept. He continued to add on to the album past its release date. This inspired me to do something similar with my review scores. Why should anyone force their feelings to remain stagnant? In my opinion, they should never have to.

2016 KAMMY Award Winners

That said, I am always striving to find the perfect score. And when December 31st creeps closer, I aim to reward the songs, albums, and artists who are deserving of praise. My awards highlight artistic quality and integrity across the hip-hop, R&B and pop genres, with an award for Best Electronic/Experimental Album as well. Countless tracks have graced my ears, and each year I cannot wait to share them with you all! Above this paragraph is a link to last year’s winners. Peep my 2017 nominees below. Let me know how you feel in the Comments section at the bottom of this page. I am always open to outside opinions. Thanks for reading, and enjoy!
