Tonight, Fox’s hit television musical drama, Empire returns for a fourth season. Created by director Lee Daniels, Empire follows the fictional record label of the same name run by the Lyon Family. Headed by their patriarch Lucious (Terrence Howard) who is a gangsta rapper turned music mogul, he is looking to his three sons to carry his legacy. Two of his three sons, Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and Hakeem (Bryshere “Yazz” Gray) are musically inclined with his oldest Andre (Trai Byers) is the company man. The group is joined by their mother Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) who’s hustle led to the family becoming who they are today.
The first two soundtracks were supervised by mega-producer Timbaland before R&B Hitman, Rodney Jerkins, took over for the third season.
We look at ten of the best songs featured on the hit television from the three major soundtrack releases.
10. Like My Daddy (Feat. Jussie Smollett)
The first entry comes from the show’s second season, and it’s about how Smollett’s character is fighting to try not to be like his father. Throughout the show, there has been much tension between Lucious and his middle son, Jamal due to Jamal’s success matching that and even surpassing him. Most of its anger towards his son’s sexuality.
9. Mimosa (feat. Jamila Velazquez, Raquel Castro, and Yani Marin)
In the show’s second season, the youngest Lyon, Hakeem attempts to form a girl group featuring three aspiring Latin women. While Hakeem’s intention was to have his own personal harem of women, the group went bust but not before turning out one of the catchiest pop tunes from the show.
8. Snitch Bitch (Feat. Terrence Howard and Petey Pablo)
This season two jam sees papa Lyon teaming up with 2000’s rapper Petey Pablo for a classic snitches get stitches anthem.
7. Got That Work (feat. Yazz)
Our seventh entry is a cut from the youngest Lyon, Hakeem showing off his prowess as an MC during the show’s second season.
6. What is Love (Feat. V Bozeman)
What is Love, is a heart-wrenching ballad performed by singer V. Bozeman who plays a small part in the series as herself. The ballad is one of the many Timbaland produced tracks from the show’s first season soundtrack.
5. Look But Don’t Touch (Feat. Serayah)
Singer Sereyah stars as Tiana Brown, Hakeem’s on again-off again girlfriend and Empire signee. On this cut Tiana get’s sexy with the catchy ladies anthem inspired by an infamous moment by the late Anna Nicole Smith. A beautiful Tiana boasts several times throughout the song’s hook “Look at my body/Don’t I look sexy?”
4. Chasing the Sky (feat. Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett & Yazz)
This next cut sees Papa Lyon teaming up with his musical sons Jamal and Hakeem on the uplifting tune Chasing the Sky taken from the show’s second season and is produced by Timbaland protegee Beanz.
3. Drip Drop (Feat. Yazz and Serayah)
Yazz and Serayah team up as the young lovers Hakeem and Tiana for the sweaty club anthem, Drip Dop. Backed by a sizzling beat, the duo heats things up with sexually suggestive lyrics that are almost too hot for TV.
2. Ready To Go (Feat. Jussie Smollett)
The Swizz Beats produced Ready to Go is a summer anthem performed by Jamal from the second season of the hit show Empire. The song has gained much popularity due to it being featured in a Pepsi ad that tied in tot he show’s cannon
1. You’re So Beautiful (Feat. Jussie Smollett and Yazz)
Arguably the fan favorite from the first season, You’re So Beautiful sees Jamal and Hakeem team up to pay tribute to their iconic father Lucious. This is a throwback cover to one of his many “hits” in the cannon with Jamal covering the verses and Hakeem adding in new school flavor with his raps.
