When Stephan Winkelmann, former CEO of Lamborghini, joined Audi as the head of their Quattro division last year there was much speculation that Audi would be breathing new life into the crown jewel of its lineup, the Audi R8.

However, in a recent Top Gear interview, Winkelmann disclosed that his focus at Audi has primarily been on electrification and their Motorsports division. He also appears to be more interested in producing an RS SUV than an updated R8.

Based on Winkelmann’s recent comments it seems that Audi will be releasing an RS SUV in the near future (likely an RS Q7), joining Mercedes and BMW in the sports SUV phenomenon. In recent years we have seen Mercedes releasing endless AMG models and BMW throwing M badges on seemingly everything. Now Audi will be following suit with their RS line.
